Today, 11 January 2015, the Orthodox Church is on the Sunday after the Baptism of the Lord<\/em>. Today, the Evangelical pericope of Saint Evangelist Matthew 4:12-17 which presents the Beginning of the Lord\u2019s preaching<\/em> was read in all the places of worship of the Romanian Patriarchate.<\/p>\n

His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania delivered a sermon in the chapel dedicated to Saint Gregory the Enlightener of the Patriarchal Residence, in which he showed the teaching of the Gospel fragment: \u201cFirst of all we see the relationship between the light of the Baptism of Jesus Christ, our Lord, and the light of His Gospel by which He calls the Jewish people who were living in the darkness, namely they did not know the fullness of the divine revelation, as well as the pagan peoples who were living in the land of the shadows of death because they did not know the only True God, the Creator of the heaven and earth. This is why today\u2019s Gospel tells us that the people who were living in darkness saw the great light dawning. Secondly, we understand that the light of the Baptism of the Lord is the light of our life and the light of the entire universe. We see in the Baptism of Jesus Christ, our Lord that man is in the focus of the attention and love of the Most Holy Trinity. The words of the troparion: \u201c<\/em>When You, O Lord were baptized in the Jordan, the worship of the Trinity was made manifest\u201d<\/em> mean that the entire Holy Trinity appeared at the Baptism of the Lord in the River Jordan, with the human nature in the focus which God-the-Son adopted in order to heal it from sin, to enlighten and deify it, bringing it to the similarity with the One Holy God.<\/p>\n

His Beatitude explained the fact that the Incarnation o Jesus Christ, our Lord represents the fullness of the revelation of God to man: \u201cThe Gospel of this Sunday shows us that after Saint John the Baptist was imprisoned, Jesus left for Galilee. Once arrived there He stayed in Nazareth first, and then moved to Capernaum, near the sea, a town where many foreigners lived besides Jews, people of various nations and faiths. The Gospel says that Jesus went there to fulfil a plan of God which Prophet Isaiah announces as follows: \u201cthe people living in darkness<\/em>have seen a great light;<\/em> on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned<\/em>.\u201d What is the great light?<\/em> Certainly, it is not the physical light of the sun, but as the Holy Fathers explain, it is a spiritual light. More exactly, the great light<\/em> is the fullness of revelation of God through His incarnated Son, Jesus Christ. All the revelation of God through the prophets is a light in stages, culminating with the great light<\/em> or full<\/em> light which is the Son of God Himself, the One who was made man out of love for humans and for their salvation\u201d.<\/p>\n

The light created which we see with our own eyes is a symbol of the uncreated and eternal Light, of the glory of God<\/em>, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel showed, saying further on: \u201cThe people who were living in the darkness, namely not knowing the divine saving truth see a great light, namely God-the-Man present near them. This great light is Christ \u2013 the Light of the world – namely the first and ultimate sense of everything that exists, because everything was made in Christ, through Christ and for Christ. This is why He imprints the ultimate sense of the entire created existence, both to the material universe and to the unseen world. The people who were living in the darkness were the Jewish people who although they had caught some glimpses of the saving truth through the Law of Moses and through the prophets, yet they often infringed it and were living in the darkness. The Gospel of this day also explains that the light rose to those who were living in the shadow of the death. Here the pagan peoples were concerned who were living in a greater ignorance of the saving truth than the Jewish people. Thus, the land of the shadow of death<\/em> means the state of religious confusion and sin of the pagan world. Sin causes the death of the man\u2019s soul before the death of the body. It is in this context of the dark human existence not knowing the truth and suffering spiritual degradation that a great light<\/em> comes, namely Jesus Christ, God-the-Man. The fact that He starts preaching in Galilee, where the Jews lived together with people belonging to different ethnic populations shows us that the coming of Jesus Christ, our Lord into the world is designed to save the entire world, not only the Jews\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe call to repentance of today\u2019s Gospel is designed to get eternal life. Jesus Christ starts preaching His Gospel with the words:Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near<\/em>. The kingdom of heaven Jesus Christ, our Saviour, speaks of is not only in heaven, but it comes on the earth too, among people, having been mysteriously included and focused in Christ. Christ is the Kingdom of Heaven descended among people because He is the King of Heaven, and wherever He is present, the Father and the Holy Spirit are present too. In fact, the Sunday after the Baptism of the Lord teaches us that both the Nativity of Jesus Christ, our Saviour, and His Baptism reveal us the rapprochement of the Kingdom of God to the people. Thus, the relationship between the Light of the coming of Christ in the world and the light of the revelation of the Kingdom of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is more clearly seen on the occasion of the Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. The Christian Baptism is the beginning of man\u2019s entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven\u201d, His Beatitude also showed. The Patriarch of Romania has also spoken about the relationship between the Baptism of the Lord<\/em> and the baptism of tears<\/em>: \u201cThe Light of the Baptism of the Lord is a great light<\/em> for every one of us, for the life of the church and of the human society, in general. If this holy light is diminished or lost, the world becomes an environment of darkness, of the selfish passion, of violence, of the possessive or degrading exploitation of the human persons, this one having been the moral crisis, and the possessive degrading exploitation of the surrounding nature, and so, an ecological crisis. Thus, the spiritual birth of the sinful man begins with the Holy Baptism in the name of the Most Holy Trinity. This one is celebrated only once because it is One Lord, one, faith, one Baptism<\/em>. Baptism is not repeated, but renewed through the repentance called the baptism of tears<\/em>. We are baptised in the Holy Spirit and in water only once, but we cleanse the sins committed after Baptism many times, through repentance, namely through the baptism of the tears\u201d.<\/p>\n

His Beatitude Daniel emphasised the spiritual importance of the Sacraments of Baptism and of Repentance for the life of the Christians: \u201cBoth the Holy Sacrament of Baptism, and the Holy Sacrament of Repentance are sources of light and joy for the Christian life.<\/p>\n

His Beatitude Daniel emphasised the spiritual importance of the Mystery of Baptism and Repentance for the Christians\u2019 life: \u201cBoth the Holy Sacrament of the Baptism and the Holy Sacrament of Repentance are sources of light and joy for the Christian life. Let us never forget that we have been baptised in the name, light and love of the Most Holy Trinity and that all our life we must glorify the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit through thought and words, prayer and good deeds. Let us pray Jesus Christ, our Lord, to help us receive His Gospel as the Gospel of the eternal love and life in the Kingdom of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, to get ready as often as possible through repentance and good deeds for the communication with Holy Sacraments of the Church through which we foretaste the joy of the eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven\u201d. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
