The Synod of the Metropolis of Oltenia held a session on Bright Tuesday, May 7, during which it proposed a new monastic saint for canonization.
Meeting at Lainici Monastery in Gorj County, the hierarchs discussed the events dedicated to the canonization of Venerable Ioan, the first abbot of Hurezi Monastery, founded in 1690 by St. Constantine Brâncoveanu, the Prince of Wallachia between 1688 and 1714.
Venerable Ioan was originally from the Argeș area. He entered monasticism at Negru Vodă Monastery, where he eventually became a hieromonk and later abbot.
In 1692, he was appointed abbot of Hurezi Monastery by St. Constantine. During his life, he also founded the Holy Apostles Hermitage and coordinated the construction of the St. Stefan Hermitage, founded by St. Stefan Brâncoveanu in 1698, and the monastery hospital founded by Maria Brâncoveanu in 1700.
He also coordinated the construction and renovation at the Polovragi and Cozia Monasteries.
Venerable Ioan was also the closest confidant, collaborator, and cleric of the family of the holy ruler Constantine Brâncoveanu.
He reposed in the Lord in the summer of 1726 and was buried in the monastery church at Hurezi.
