March 1900 – Professor, conductor and composer NICOLAE LUNGU was born
in Dobrior, county of Dolj. Studies at the “Central” Seminary (1912 –
1920) and at the Normal School for Teachers (graduated 1920),
Conservatoire of Bucharest (1920 – 1925) and the Faculty of Theology
(graduated 1927), summer courses for conductors in Vienna (1928 – 1929);
Music professor in Bucharest with the Secondary Schools of “Mihai
Eminescu” (1927 – 1931) and “AurelVlaicu” (1931 – 1938), with the
University Pedagogic Seminary of “Titu Maiorescu” (1939 – 1941);
inspector for musical education (1941 – 1944), professor with the “Saint
Sava” Secondary School (1944-1948) and with “Tudor Vladimirescu” Mixed
School (1948-1956); second conductor with the “Carmen” choral society,
with the People’s Atheneums (1926 – 1927), with the “Song to Romania”
Society (1929 – 1935), then conductor of the choir of the “Cultural
League” (1927 – 11928), founder and conductor of “Romania” Choral
Society (1934 – 1949); choir conductor with the churches of St Elijah –
Gorgani (1921 – 1922), Cotroceni (1922 – 1928), Amza (1928-1939), St.
Spiridon the New (1940 – 1947); titular lecturer for church music, rite
and typikon with the University Theological Institute (1949 – 1976) and
conductor of the Romanian Patriarchate Choral (1947 – 1985): member of
the Composers Union of Romania. Works: Music Manual for secondary forms
I-VII and for forms I-IV of the commercial secondary schools, in several
editions (1936 – 1947); Psalter Music Grammar. Comparative Study with
linear notation (1951, in collaboration with Rev. Grigore Costea and Ion
Croitoru). He passed away on 18 July 1993 in Bucharest.
