March 1980 – Professor, composer and conductor IOAN CHIRESCU passed

away in Bucharest (born on 5/18 January in Cernavodă, county of

Constanța). Studies at the Secondary School “Saint Sava” of Bucharest,

Central Seminary of Bucharest (1910), Faculty of Theology of Bucharest

(1910 – 1914), Consevatoire of Music of Bucharest (1914), specialised

courses at “Schola Cantorum” of Paris (1922 – 1927). He was a music

professor in Caracal and Fălticeni (1914 – 1922), at “Gheorghe Șincai”

of Bucharest (1922 – 1927), professor at the chair of Theory – solfeggio

at the Conservatoire for Music and Art of Bucharest (1928 – 1964). He

conducted the choirs of the churches of: “Enei”, “St. Visarion” and

“Cuibul cu barză” of Bucharest, of the Romanian Orthodox chapel of

Paris, of the church of “Domnița Bălașa” of Bucharest (1928 – 1976), of

“Carmen” choir (1927 – 1950). Works: Liturgy in sol major for joined

choir (1944); Chants of the Divine Liturgy according to the 6th voice

(mi minor) (1969). He composed many carols, hymns and religious chants.
