The Metropolis of Moldavia and Bukovina’s “Five Loaves and Two Fish – Food for All” project provides hot meals and support to vulnerable people. Launched in May in Iași, the mobile social kitchen has so far reached more than 680 beneficiaries.
According to the organisers, the project has grown steadily with each edition. While about 90 people received assistance each week at the beginning, the tenth edition served 160 beneficiaries.
“Not because we launched a more aggressive promotional campaign, but because the Circle of Good naturally continues to grow. Our beneficiaries are the ones who spread the word to other people they see in need. The message is passed from one person to another, just as genuine acts of kindness have always been shared,” project representatives said.
The organisers stressed that, beyond providing a hot meal, the initiative also offers people a sense of belonging. Some beneficiaries, despite having very little themselves, choose to give back through small donations, while others have become project volunteers.
“This is perhaps the clearest proof that dignity is not lost when someone needs help. On the contrary, it can become the starting point for giving back to others,” representatives of the Fiideajutor.ro platform said.
Brighter faces
Project representatives said they have also noticed a change over time in the attitude of those who come to receive assistance.
“During the first editions, we met uncertain, hesitant faces. Today, we see something different. People arrive brighter, even smiling. They come with the reassurance that they will not be judged or turned away, but that they will find, in the courtyard of the Metropolis, a safe place where they can enjoy a moment of peace.”
The organisers added that statistics alone cannot tell the full story.
“Every number behind a social project can easily become abstract. But behind every name is a person with a life story, and with a Thursday on which they were seen, listened to, and given something to eat.”
The “Five Loaves and Two Fish – Food for All” project is run through the Metropolis of Moldavia and Bukovina’s Fiideajutor.ro platform in partnership with the Filantropia Federation of the Romanian Patriarchate.
