Romanian firefighters are battling wildfires in the Greek region of Attica, near the well-known “Saint Ephraim the New” Monastery in Nea Makri. According to a statement from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the national specialized wildfire unit, which operated throughout the night, is facing extreme challenges due to shifting winds.
Both Nea Makri and Penteli Monasteries were evacuated Monday morning, reports Orthodoxia News Agency.
The fires have rapidly spread amid high temperatures, lack of rainfall, low humidity, and strong winds, threatening significant areas and approaching residential zones. In some cases, homes have been engulfed by the flames.
The Romanian firefighters’ missions have focused on protecting and extinguishing homes and containing wildfires. They worked tirelessly throughout Sunday night into Monday morning, using three wildfire trucks, a large-capacity fire truck (10,000 litres of water), and a 30,000-liter water tanker.
From August 1 to September 15, 2024, the Department for Emergency Situations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, through the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, is participating for the fourth consecutive year with a specialized national wildfire unit to strengthen the resilience of Greek authorities in managing such risks.
