President Maia Sandu announced that adults who belong to national minorities in the Republic of Moldova would benefit from free Romanian language courses starting in 2023.
This will be achieved by expanding the Ministry of Education’s National Program for teaching the Romanian language to non-native speakers, until now only intended for children from national minorities.
“Ten million lei were provided for this purpose. The government is going to adopt a government decision that will clarify the details of this program,” Maia Sandu wrote on her Facebook page.
The amount was included in the state budget voted on December 22, 2022, when deputy Natalia Davidovici thanked the government for allocating this money.
“Unfortunately, in the 30 years of Moldova’s independence, we did not have such a program at the national level. Everything that has been so far was something fragmentary. The realization of this program is expected by many people who would like to learn the Romanian language,” the Moldovan deputy noted.
“I was also born in a family where the Russian language is spoken, and I know how difficult it is for those for whom the Romanian language is not their mother tongue. We must ensure all the conditions so citizens from any corner of our country can learn the Romanian language for free.”
The Romanian language teaching program for non-native speakers was launched in 2013 at the initiative of the Ministry of Education. Until 2022, the program was insufficiently funded and only provided for the organization of Romanian language courses for children, RFI reports.
