Fifth anniversary of Colectiv club fire marked with prayers for the victims

Fr Aurel Mihai, vicar at the Archdiocese of Bucharest, led a memorial service on Friday morning for the 65 victims of the deadly fire that broke out during a concert at the Colectiv Club in Bucharest in 2015.

The service that was performed at Bucur Square next to the building that once housed the Colectiv nightclub brought ‘consolation and spiritual balm to the souls of the families that were left behind,’ Father Aurel Mihai said.

‘It is a sad day,’ he stressed. ‘But our Holy Church remembers them according to the ordinance and each time the holy prayers create this state of connection, of communion with those who have left this life, as we learn from the words of our Saviour Jesus Christ.’

An additional memorial ceremony for the victims was officiated at St Nicholas – Brosteni Church, where a white monument with an angel putting hands together in prayer was built by the Orthodox Archdiocese of Bucharest at the initiative of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel.

On Friday, President Klaus Iohannis promulgated a law on granting lifelong medical treatment to the survivors of the tragedy at Colectiv.
