2024 Romfilatelia Easter stamps showcase Stavropoleos monastery icons of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection

This year, Romfilatelia has released Easter-themed postage stamps featuring images that recount the narrative of Christ’s Resurrection and Passion.

Romfilatelia selected Stavropoleos monastery for its Easter stamp issue because this year marks the 300th anniversary of the monastery’s consecration.

On April 5, 2024, Romfilatelia distributed the stamps to post offices nationwide.

The 2024 Holy Easter stamp issue depicts Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, the crucifixion, and the Lord’s Resurrection. The icons belong to the heritage of the tricentennial Stavropoleos Monastery, founded by Archimandrite Ioannichie in 1724 and dedicated to the Holy Archangels and Saint Athanasius the Great.

The images are framed in a white border. The words “Sfintele Paști 2024” (Holy Easter 2024) are printed in red lettering along the sides.

Romfilatelia expressed gratitude to the abbess of Stavropoleos Monastery and His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel for “their documentary support throughout the development of this postage stamps issue.”

Following the departure of the Greek monks, Stavropoleos Monastery underwent a comprehensive restoration, which lasted more than a century and was supervised by the Historical Monuments Commission.

As per the design of architect Ion Mincu, the church underwent a process of consolidation, restoration, tower reconstruction, and construction of a new enclosure.

On December 6, 1940, it was reinstated as a (parochial) church and a facility dedicated to restoring church items was established within its boundaries.

Due to the restoration efforts conducted from 1996 to 2003, the church regained its original splendour and status as a cultural and spiritual monument in Bucharest.

Father Iustin Marchiș restored the monument, and after the tumultuous years of communism, community and liturgical life were reinstated.

The monastery was reestablished in 2008 with a community of nuns.
