The Construction of „Saint Sofia” Cathedral in Warsaw Is Being Continued

The construction of “Saint Sofia” Cathedral has made progress. Several images displayed, on 12 August 2016, on the official website of the Orthodox Church of Poland show the stage of construction of the church symbol of the Polish Orthodox faithful.

The foundation stone of the place of worship was laid on 5 December 2015, with the consecration service celebrated by His Holiness Bartholomaios, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.

His Holiness Bartholomaios referred, at the time, to the prototype of the cathedral, which is in the Muslim Turkey now, saying that Saint Sofia is neither a museum, nor a mosque, because it has always been an Orthodox Cathedral where the angels are silently wailing and raising prayers to God.

The new Cathedral in Warsaw has the value of a symbol for the Polish people. According to His Beatitude Sava, Metropolitan of Warsaw, Metropolitan of Warsaw and All Poland, Saint Sofia Cathedral will be a monument in the honour of the Orthodox refugees of 1915, martyrs from Chełmska and Podlasie regions, victims of Vistula (Wisla) Action, from Furmanów village, and in the honour of all those who suffered and gave their lives for Orthodoxy”.

The construction of the Cathedral is a premiere for Poland, because it is the first Orthodox church that is being built in Warsaw in the last 100 years. It will be 37 m long, 39 m wide and 22 m high.
