Solemn and Commemorative Year 2017 officially proclaimed in the Romanian Patriarchate

His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, Sunday officially proclaimed year 2017 as Solemn Year of Holy Icons, Iconographers and Church Painters and Commemorative Year of Patriarch Justinian and of the Defenders of Orthodoxy during Communism.

His Grace Varlaam of Ploieşti, Assistant Bishop to the Patriarch and Secretary of the Holy Synod, read out Jan. 1 the official proclamation, which we present here below.

During its working sessions of 28-29 October 2015, 25 February and 16 December 2016, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church decided the following:

  1. Declared the year 2017 as Solemn Year of Holy Icons, Iconographers and Church Painters and Commemorative Year of Patriarch Justinian and of the Defenders of Orthodoxy during Communism in the Romanian Patriarchate.
  2. Approved the national Church framework, which will be brought to the attention of dioceses in order to achieve the liturgical, cultural and media project entitled: “2017 – Solemn Year of Holy Icons, Iconographers and Church Painters and Commemorative Year of Patriarch Justinian and of the Defenders of Orthodoxy during Communism in the Romanian Patriarchate”.
  3. Approved as emblematic figures of the Solemn Year of Holy Icons, Iconographers and Church Painters the Holy Apostle Luke the Evangelist, Saint John Damascene and Saint Theodore the Studite.
  4. Approved that all central and diocesan church institutions, as well as all theological seminaries and faculties of Orthodox Theology take necessary measures to illustrate the national church framework entitled “2017 – Solemn Year of Holy Icons, Iconographers and Church Painters and Commemorative Year of Patriarch Justinian and of the Defenders of Orthodoxy during Communism”, through local actions and events (by media, publishing, conferences, meetings, symposia; pastoral, theological, catechetical and spiritual seminars), by the contribution of hierarchs, professors of theology, priests, monastics, and other specialists.
  5. Approved that the “Solemn Year of Holy Icons, Iconographers and Church Painters” be the topic of the spring pastoral and missionary Conference, and the “Commemorative Year of Patriarch Justinian and of the Defenders of Orthodoxy during Communism” be the topic of the autumn pastoral and missionary Conference, having the possibility to address these topics at the monthly clergy administrative conferences established by each diocese, as well as in pastoral circles.
  6. Approved that the Solemn Year 2017 Diploma be awarded to meritorious persons, involved in the creation, defending and promotion of holy icons.
  7. Approved the printing of the Patriarch Justinian Commemorative Medal and Diploma, which will be awarded to persons who contributed to the organization and promotion of the year 2017 as Commemorative Year of Patriarch Justinian and of the Defenders of Orthodoxy during Communism in the Romanian Patriarchate.
  8. The Basilica Press Centre of the Romanian Patriarchate will present the events related to the Solemn and Commemorative Year 2017 in the Romanian Patriarchate.
