Retrospective of 2016 in Romanian Patriarchate

January

1 January 2016 – After the Te Deum service officiated on the first day of the Year 2016, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, officially proclaimed the Year 2016 as a Solemn Year of the Religious Education of the Orthodox Christian Youth and a Commemorative Year of Saint Hieromartyr Anthimos the Ivirite and of the Church Typographers in the Romanian Patriarchate.

24 January 2016 – The Primates of the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches, who participated at the Synaxis held in Chambésy – Geneva, includind Patriarch Daniel of Romania, concelebrated Sunday, 24 January 2016, the Divine Liturgy at St Paul Church of the Orthodox Centre of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Chambésy, Switzerland.

31 January 2016 – the Patriarchate of Jerusalem proclaimed Ioan Iacob from Neamt as a saint. The Romanian Patriarchate was represented at this event by a delegation headed by His Grace Timotei Prahoveanul, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest.

February

9 February 2016 – His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel received, at the patriarchal residence of Bucharest, Her Excellency Stella Ronner-Grubačić, Ambassador of the Netherlandsto Romania on an introductory visit.

10 February 2016 – His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, received the Ambassador of Israel to Bucharest, Her Excellency Mrs. Tamar Samash, on a presentation visit, at the Patriarchal Residence.

18 February 2016 – His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, consecrated the new headquarters of the Deanery of District 6, Bucharest. Along, with His Beatitude also served His Grace Timotei of Prahova, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest.

March

1 March 2016 – His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel received His Excellency Mr Mile Vasić, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Romania, on a presentation visit.

8 March 2016 – His Excellency Romanian President Mr Klaus Iohannis and his wife, Carmen Iohannis, visited the Representation of the Romanian Patriarchate to Jerusalem. The Romanian President and his delegation were encountered by the V. Rev. Archimandrite Teofil Anăstăsoaie, Superior of the Romanian Settlements in the Holy Land, together with the members of the Romanian community.

April

4 April 2016 – His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, participated at the solemn festivity of the Romanian Academy dedicated to the 150th anniversary since its foundation.

30 April 2016 – His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, welcomed at the Patriarchal Cathedral the Holy Fire (Light) from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The Assistant Bishops to the Patriarch, Their Graces Varlaam of Ploiești and Ieronim of Sinaia, were also present. The Holy Fire was brought to Romania by a delegation of our Church led by His Grace Timotei of Prahova, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest.

May

1 May 2016 – Thousands of believers present on the Hill of Joy (Hill of the Patriarchate) received the Holy Fire brought from Jerusalem. The Resurrection Service was presided by the Head of the Romanian Orthodox Church. His Grace Timotei of Prahova, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest, served together with the Patriarch.

9 May 2016 – His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania attended the reception organised by the Presidency of Romania, on the occasion of Europe’s Day.

21 May 2016 – The Patriarchal Cathedral celebrated its patronal feast. On this occasion, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, in the summer altar of the Patriarchal Cathedral.

June

8 June 2016 – His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church received at the Patriarchal Residence the visit of Mr Mihai Grinbincea, Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova in Romania.

20 June 2016 – During the opening session of the Holy and Great Council held Monday, 20 June 2016, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, addressed a word in which he stressed out the importance of synodality and respecting it not only at local level, but also at pan-Orthodox level. The holmily of His Beatitude was appreciated by the Ecumenical Patriarch and characterised as theological.

July

6 July 2016 – His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania met, at Patriarch Justinian Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Bucharest, the 190 priests of the Metropolitanate of Muntenia and Dobrudgea who are attending, these days, the courses for priestly degrees.

August

6 August 2016 – On the occasion of the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the Patriarchal Cathedral by His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Besides His Beatitude, His Grace Varlaam Ploieşteanul, Assistant Bishop to the Patriarch, and His Grace Timotei Prahoveanul, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest also concelebrated, assisted by a group of priests and deacons.

10 August 2016 – His Beatitude, Patriarch of Romania paid homage to Queen Ana of Romania. A delegation of the Romanian Orthodox Church was present at Peleş Castle of Sinaia, where the body of the queen was lying in state.

13 August 2016 – His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, prayed for Queen Ana, at the Royal Palace, where Her Majesty was lying in state for the last few days. The Trisagion service was celebrated by the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church together with His Eminence Iosif, Romanian Orthodox Metropolitan of Western and Southern Europe, and His Eminence Metropolitan Nifon, Archbishop of Târgovişte.

September

1 September 2016 – Thursday evening, 1 September 2016, the opening ceremony of the International Meeting of Orthodox Youth was held in Bucharest. First, in the presence of Patriarch Daniel, His Grace Timotei of Prahova, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest, officiated a thanksgiving (Te Deum) service at the summer altar of the Patriarchal Cathedral. Following the service, the thousands of young people sang, together with the byzantine music choir Tronos, the national anthem of Romania – Romanian, wake up!

2 September 2016 – thousands of young people participated in the Lights Procession. After attending the spiritual conference entitled Jesus Christ – Joy of Life, held at the Palace Hall in Bucharest, the young participants in #ITO2016 set out in procession to the Patriarchate Hill on the route Palace Hall –Victoriei Avenue – United Nations Square – Patriarchate Hill.

2 September 2016 – His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church participated in the General Assembly of the Romanian Academy as honorary member. Besides His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, His Eminence Laurenţiu, Metropolitan of Transylvania, and His Eminence Irineu, Metropolitan of Oltenia were also present.

27 September 2016 – Hundreds of faithful were present at the Divine Liturgy officiated in Bucharest, on the feast of Hieromartyr Saint Anthimos the Ivirite. His Beatitude John X, Patriarch of Antioch and all East, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, and Metropolitan John of Rustavi, representative of the Patriarch of Georgia, concelebrated.

30 September 2016 – His Beatitude Daniel celebrated Friday, , nine years since his enthronement as Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. On this anniversary, after the Divine Liturgy, a Te Deum service was officiated as thanksgiving brought to God for the bounties poured out upon the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Romanian people and His Beatitude during the nine years of patriarchal ministry. The divine services were celebrated by His Grace Timotei of Prahova, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest, in the presence of the hierarchs of the Holy Synod and the faithful.

October

14 October 2016Thousands of faithful from all across Romania participated in the Divine Liturgy, officiated in Iași on the Feast of Pious Saint Paraskeva the New. Representatives of state and local authorities also took part in the event.

27 October 2016 – The Orthodox Church celebrates Thursday, 27 October 2016, the Pious Saint Demetrius the New, Protector of Bucharest. The Patriarch of Romania presided over the Divine Liturgy officiated at the outdoor altar next to the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest.

November

7 November 2016 – Priests from Bucharest and Ilfov County participated at the autumn session of the pastoral and missionary Conference entitled 2016 – Commemorative Year of Hieromartyr St Anthimos the Ivirite and of the Church typographers. The event took place in the Patriarch Teoctist Aula of the Patriarchal Palace. His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, chaired the meeting.

23 November 2016 – His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel received the visit of His Excellency Valery Kuzmin, Ambassador of Russian Federation to Romania, at the Patriarchal Residence in Bucharest.

December

1 December 2016 – His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, attended the reception organised at Cotroceni Palace by the Presidency of Romania, on the National Day of Romania.

16 December 2016 – The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church met for an extraordinary session at the Patriarchal Residence, under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel. During this meeting, the new Bishop for the vacant seat of Maramureş and Sătmar was elected, following the death of His Eminence Hon Archbishop Justinian Chira. By secret ballot, the Holy Synod elected His Grace Justin as Bishop for the vacant seat of Maramureş and Sătmar, by 36 votes out of 43 valid votes cast.

17 December 2016 – On the feast of the Holy Prophet Daniel His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, celebrated his spiritual protector. On this occasion, His Beatitude presided over the Divine Liturgy officiated at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest.

20 December 2016 – His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel welcomed three groups of carollers coming from different parts of Romania.

21 December 2016 – His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel received, at the Patriarchal Residence, His Excellency Mrs. Tamar Samash, Ambassador of Israel to Bucharest.
