Remains of allegedly poisoned to death Husi Bishop Grigore Leu exhumed

The body of the former Bishop Grigorie Leu of Huși was exhumed on Wednesday, Sept. 26, to clarify certain medico-legal aspects by experts in forensic medicine from the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes in Romania (IICMER) and Public prosecutor’s office.

The former Bishop of Husi Grigorie Leu was allegedly poisoned to death during the communist regime in 1949.

Attending the event was the current Bishop of Husi Ignatie Trif who officiated a memorial service for his predecessor.

‘It is not difficult to understand, if we look into his biography, that he was a man of verticality, morality and of a capacity to profess the faith as only martyrs had,’ Bishop Ignatie said at Grigorie Leu’s memorial service.

His Grace Bishop Ignatie said that the exhumation process is ‘a historical chance’ to find the real causes of Bishop Grigorie’s death.

‘When we are close to a confessor, we receive something from his own spirit. His profession of faith remains a reference point in our consciousness and in recent church history,’ he added.

Bishop Grigorie Leu fell asleep in the Lord on March 1, 1949.

A symposium dedicated to Bishop Grigorie Leu’s 70th death anniversary will be organized at the beginning of next year, Bp Ignatie announced.
