Holy Synod elects His Grace Justin as new Bishop of Maramureş and Sătmar

The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church met Friday, 16 December 2016, for an extraordinary session at the Patriarchal Residence, under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel.

During this meeting, the new Bishop for the vacant seat of Maramureş and Sătmar was elected, following the death of His Eminence Hon Archbishop Justinian Chira.

The Metropolitan Synod of the Holy Metropolis of Cluj, Maramureş and Sălaj, in consultation with the Diocesan Assembly of Maramureş and Sătmar, appointed by secret ballot Thursday, 8 December 2016, as candidates: His Grace Justin of Sighet, Assistant Hierarch to the Diocese of Maramureş and Sătmar, and the Very Reverend Archimandrite Timotei Bel, Abbot of Scărişoara Nouă Monastery and Exarch of the Monasteries in the Diocese of Maramureş and Sătmar.

By secret ballot, the Holy Synod elected His Grace Justin as Bishop for the vacant seat of Maramureş and Sătmar, by 36 votes out of 43 valid votes cast.

The enthronement of the new Bishop of Maramureş and Sătmar will take place Tuesday, 27 December 2016, in Baia Mare.
