His Beatitude Patriarch John X pays historic visit to New York

The Patriarch is on a visit to the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America which includes nine Dioceses containing over 275 cathedrals, churches, and missions throughout the United States and Canada. The visit began on Friday, 20 October.

His Beatitude will be in the Washington DC area to meet with the leadership of the United Nations as well as with members of the current administration of the United States to promote a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis; to highlight the current humanitarian crisis; and to discuss the future of Christians in Syria and the Middle East.

His Beatitude will also be an honoured guest at the “In Defense of Christians” Summit in Washington DC, on October 24–26. The Summit is entitled “American Leadership and Securing the Future of Christians in the Middle East.”

On October 24, Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom will host a conversation with His Beatitude John X, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, and His Eminence Joseph, Metropolitan of All North America. Hudson Senior Fellow Samuel Tadros will moderate the conversation. The theme of the conversation is The Future of Orthodox Christianity in Syria and America.

On Saturday, October 21, His Beatitude officiated the Vespers at the Holy Apostles Cathedral in Washington. On Sunday, at the same Cathedral, concelebrants for the Patriarchal Divine Liturgy with His Beatitude were His Eminence Joseph, Archbishop of New York and Metropolitan of all North America, His Grace Bishop Irinej of Eastern America of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and His Grace Bishop Alexander of Ottawa, Eastern Canada, and Upstate New York of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America.

Also joining in the celebration was the Very Reverend Protopresbyter Aleksa Micich, together with the believers from the St Luke Serbian Orthodox Church in Potomac, Maryland. Among the officials present were His Excellency Djerdj and Mrs. Vera Matkovic, Ambassador of Serbia to the United States of America.

During the Liturgy, Patriarch John X spoke about the dire situation of the persecuted Christians in the Middle East and the need f to remember always our Orthodox brethren there in our prayers. His Beatitude also referred to the difficult situation for many Serbs in their Homeland.

At the end of the Liturgy, a Memorial Service was officiated for the Bishop Antoun and Protopresbyter George Rados, who recently departed this life.
