Ecumenical Patriarchate to initiate dialogue with sister Churches on Ukrainian Autocephaly

Sinod Patriarhia Ecumenică anunță consultări cu Bisericile surori referitor la Biserica din Ucraina

Following its working session on April 19-20, 2018, the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate released a communiqué stating that it has decided to begin a dialogue and coordination with its sister autocephalous Orthodox Churches on the matter of creating an autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The Ecumenical patriarchate noted it will examine the matter according to the Sacred Canons, the tradition of the Church in order to preserve pan-Orthodox unity and given the ‘care for the Orthodox Churches throughout the world — especially of the Ukrainian Orthodox Nation that has received the salvific Christian faith and holy baptism from Constantinople.’

The communique refers to the petition received from ecclesiastical and civil authorities — representing millions of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians — that requests the bestowal of autocephaly.
