Church of Bucur the Shepherd celebrates patronal feast of Sts Athanasios and Cyril of Alexandria: In pictures

The old small Church of Bucur the Shepherd, which formerly served as the chapel for the Radu Voda Monastery, marked on Friday, Jan. 18, its patronal feast in honour of Saints Athanasios and Cyril of Alexandria.

Particles of the holy relics of the Patron Saints are enshrined in the small church dedicated to Saints Cyril of Alexandria and Pope Athanasius I of Alexandria. The holy relics were received in 2017 from Bulgaria.

A legend has it that a shepherd named “Bucur” (hence the name “Bucur-esti”) once founded a settlement on the banks of the Dambovita River, midway between the Carpathians Mountains and the Danube.

The legend linked the foundation of the city of Bucharest to the pastoral tradition of the Romanian people.
