7 August 1922 – Primate Metropolitan CONON ARĂMESCU-DONICI passed away
in Bucharest. Studies at the Seminaries of Neamț and Socola. He studied
at the Faculty of Science and Philology of Iași (graduated in 1877),
later on at the Faculty of Theology of Cernăuți (1880 – 1885), where he
was awarded a doctor’s degree. Monk at Neamț Monastery (1859) and
ordained hierodeacon for Socola Monastery, later on hieromonk and
protosingelos. Professor at the National Secondary School, then at the
Normal Schools for boys and girls of Iași (1877 – 1880); after coming
back from studies he worked at the Normal Schools too, at the Boarding
Secondary School and at Veniamin Seminary. Ordained archmandrite and
appointed preacher at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Iași. In 1897 he is
ordained hierarch, with the title of “Băcăoanul”, Bishop locum tenens of
Roman (July 1899 – February 1900), on 8 February 1902 elected Bishop of
Huși; on 14 February elected Primate Metropolitan of Romania – retired
from the position on 1 January 1914. During his pastoral rule The
Synodal Bible of 1914 was printed; during the German occupation from
1916 – 1918 he remained with his faithful in Bucharest.
