February 1897 – Rev. theology professor Isidor Onciul passed away in
Cernăuți. He graduated the gymnasium (1845 – 1853) and the Theological
Institute (1853 – 1857) in Cernăuți, and attended specialization courses
at the University of Vienna (1857 – 1858). Supervisor of studies at the
Seminary (boarding school) of Cernăuți (1858 – 1862), priest at Vicovu
de Sus, near Rădăuți (1862 – 1867), substitute professor (1867), then
titular (1869) for the chair of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at
the Theological Institute. As soon as the University of Cernăuți was set
up, he became titular professor at the new Faculty of Theology (1875 –
1897), dean of this Faculty five times, hon. metropolitan counselor
(since 1874), archpresbiter (1880), member of the leadership committee
of the “Society for the Romanian culture and literature in Bucovina”. He
published various works.
