14 August 1886 – Primate Metropolitan CALINIC MICLESCU (baptised Constantine), passed away in Bucharest. Ordained monk in Huși (18 June 1842), named Calinic, by his uncle Sofronie, the future Metropolitan of Moldova is ordained hierodeacon (1843), hieromonk (1848), then protosingel and archimandrite; on 2 February 1855, “titular hiearch” named “Hariupoleos”, from 1851 – 1858, abbot at Slatina, when he set up a school in Mălini village for the peasants’ children; member of the Ad-hoc Council (1857), Bishop locum tenens of Huși (November 1858 – January 1861), then again abbot at Slatina (1861 – 1863), Metropolitan locum tenens of Moldova – from 7 May 1863 – then appointed Metropolitan (by decree on 10 May 1865); on 31 May 1875 he was elected Primate Metropolitan, holding this dignity till his death. During his pastoral rule, the courses of the Faculty of Theology of Bucharest were set up; as a result of his insistence (1881), the Printing House of the Church Books was inaugurated (1882), the Holy Great Myrrh was consecrated for the first time here (1882) and the Autocephaly of the Romanian Orthodox Church was recognised (1885).
